GET BAPTISED IN WATER

Now that you are a Christian, you can get Baptised in Water.

Now that you are a Christian, you can get Baptised in Water. You MUST understand that Baptism DOES NOT and CANNOT produce Salvation.
This information on this page is designed to offer straight-forward answers about the most commonly asked questions people have about baptism. For the purpose of your own benefit I recommend that you read and study all the Scriptures quoted in this booklet, especially
ACTS 2:21-47 because it will form the basis for most of what will be discussed on this page.

WHAT IS BAPTISM?

The English word "baptise" is a transliteration of the Greek word "baptizo" which, if translated, means "to immerse or to dip under.”

It is a public declaration of a person’s faith in Christ. It is a public pronouncement of belief. It is like preaching a visual sermon. It is a public way of saying to everyone that you have decided to give your life to Jesus Christ.

Acts 2:41 New King James Version

41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them

Having become Christians, they were willing to show others that they belonged to Jesus Christ. We must not remain secret disciples as though we are afraid of what others might think, or ashamed of our new way of life. We need to be bold about our faith in Jesus Christ and proud of our allegiance to him.

There are 3 ways in which we can confess Jesus Christ.

1. BY OUR LIPS

Romans 10:9-10 (New King James Version)

9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

You need to say it with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart.

2. BY OUR LIVES

If we tell others that we are Christians, then we must be careful to live like Christians, otherwise we shall be called hypocrites. A changed life is always a powerful witness. People may misunderstand or misinterpret our words, but they will always notice our actions.

WHAT WE DO IS AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT WE SAY. The witness of our lives resembles a bright light in a dark world. Jesus said in

Matthew 5 VS 16

“16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

3. BY BEING BAPTISED.

Baptism is also another courageous way of confessing our faith in Jesus Christ. Baptism might also be called “the badge of discipleship”. Just as people may wear a badge to identify themselves with certain movements or group. To a Christian baptism is a way of showing people that we belong to Jesus Christ.

THE MEANING OF BAPTISM

Baptism is rich with beautiful meaning and symbolism.  Baptism is an outward symbol of one's identification with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection.

When you are lowered into the water it symbolizes your identification with Christ in His death and burial. Similarly, when you rise from the water symbolizes your identification with Christ in His resurrection and new life.

Romans 6:3-5

"Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We are therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."

In Baptism we are identified with Jesus Christ in his 3 great acts that secured out salvation- His death, burial and resurrection.

When you became Christians 2 things happened

(1) Your old way of life finished.

(2) A completely new way of life began.

This is summed up by two expressions, Consider your self DEAD TO SIN and ALIVE TO GOD in Christ Jesus (Romans 6:11)

The moment our lives were linked with Christ, the 2 things that happened to him, happened also to us. We died with him to sin and its power over us and we rose with him to a new life. These great truths are clearly demonstrated in baptism by immersion.

WHO SHOULD BE BAPTISED

One must first be a believer in Christ to be eligible for baptism.

The Bible teaches that every individual who puts his or her trust in Jesus for salvation should be baptised. The Bible has many examples of this teaching.

The people who heard Peter's first sermon asked, "Brothers, what shall we do?" (Acts 2:37) He answered: "Repent, and be baptised every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” (vs. 38) Their response: "Those who accepted His message were baptised..." (vs. 41)

In the book of Acts, numerous other examples of baptism of believers are given. For example: "But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they

were baptized, both men and women. Simon himself believed, and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere..." (Acts 8:12-13) "...many of the Corinthians who heard him believed and were baptized." (Acts 18:8)

These biblical examples indicate that the person who has first repented of sin and believed in Christ should then be baptised. To baptise a person who has never become a true Christian is like dressing a man in military uniform and declaring him to be a soldier when he has never enlisted in the army

Baptism is like a wedding ring: it's the outward symbol of the commitment you make in your heart.

I WAS BAPTISED AS A CHILD, DO I NEED TO BE BAPTISED?

First, you should be grateful that you had parents who cared enough about you to set you apart for God.  However, since baptism is for those who have believed and repented, we do not practice infant baptism. An infant cannot believe. An infant cannot repent. Therefore, you should be baptised.

Being baptised as an adult is not a sign of disrespect for what your parents did. In fact, it should be seen as a fulfilment of their prayers. Be thankful for the heritage of concerned parents, but don’t be negligent of your responsibility as an adult to make your personal commitment and obedience to God in baptism

WHY SHOULD I BE BAPTISED?

Although baptism is often linked with salvation, the Bible never suggests that we can experience a spiritual change of Heart by being baptised. You must understand that Baptism does not and cannot produce Salvation. A person is not baptised to make him/her a Christian, but rather to show that he/she is a Christian.

Why then is it necessary to be baptised?. What does it signify? In baptism we actively and openly make declaration of certain facts.

1. TO FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE SET BY JESUS HIMSELF

"Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, 'I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?' Jesus replied, 'Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfil all righteousness.' Then John consented."

2. TO OBEY CHRIST'S COMMAND

"Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit..."

3. TO PUBLICLY ACKNOWLEDGE MY PERSONAL FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST

"Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day."

4. TO EXPRESS MY LOVE FOR CHRIST AND HIS WORD

"You are my friends if you do what I command."

5. BECAUSE IT UNITES YOU WITH CHRIST IN A VERY SPECIAL WAY.

"You are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ." (Galatians 6:26-27)

WHY SHOULD I BE BAPTISED BY IMMERSION ?

1. BECAUSE JESUS WAS BAPTIZED IN THAT MANNER.

"As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him." (Matthew 3:16)

2. BECAUSE IT IS THE ONLY METHOD PRACTICED IN THE BIBLE.

"And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing." (Acts 8:38-39)

"As Jesus was coming up out of the water, He saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove." ( Mark 1:10)

"Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were constantly coming to be baptized." (John 3:23)

3. BECAUSE IT IS THE LITERAL MEANING OF THE WORD BAPTIZE.

The English word "baptise" is a transliteration of the Greek word "baptizo" which, if translated, means "to immerse or to dip under.
